CAMP HOOK, 1933-1935

The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and Pres. Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal were established to battle the depressed economy by having men work to help raise money for their families. They received $30 per month, $25 of which was sent home and $5 of which they could keep for themselves. The CCC established a site located in Pootatuck State Forest in New Fairfield, and left a legacy of hiking trails and fire roads in that area of town. Starting out with tents, these were later replaced with wooden barracks to house the young men who joined the CCC to learn to swing an ax, hone their building and mason skills.
