Citizen News

by Linda Decker

“Did the Citizen News come today?” That is a phrase often heard throughout town as we have come to expect the newspaper in our mailbox each Wednesday. The office for the paper now located upstairs in the Thrift Shop building on Candlewood Corners previously was on the green in the center of town. Again it was upstairs in what is now known as the Hubbell House. (The Hubbell House is one of the two historic houses that were moved further north on Route 37 and will be restored as a museum.)

The publication now in its 36th year was at one time published monthly, then bi-weekly and then as the weekly paper as we know it. Today it serves New Fairfield and Sherman, but in the 1970s it also included the news of the Putnam Lake, New York area.

As in all community newspapers, over the years the Citizen News has been the heartbeat of our town. In addition to covering local politics, which at times can make your heart rate beat a little faster, it also covers, and maybe more importantly the week to week and year to year activities of young and old alike. The list is endless: church services, scouting news, school activities including sports and graduations, all the events sponsored by the wonderful community groups in town, houses for sale, births, marriages and deaths of family and friends and so much more.

Yes, the Citizen News came again today allowing us to continue enjoying just one of the great freedoms here in the United States of America – Freedom of the Press.

Information obtained from various sources, including past issues of the Citizen News.
