The Peace Movement in Connecticut During the Civil War

An illustrated presentation highlighting the events that led to the anti-war movement in Connecticut, and the conflicts that erupted in Fairfield County during the early years of the Civil War will be held at the New Fairfield Community Room at the Senior Center, 33 Rte 39, New Fairfield, CT on Saturday, April 10, 2010 at 7:00pm

Opposition to the Civil War in Connecticut came from many fronts and was played out in numerous ways. Local businessmen and farmers were distressed by a decline in commodity and crop prices. With no swift Northern victory in sight, the staggering losses suffered by the Union army took a toll on the morale of local residents. In response, Peace Flags were raised in several Fairfield County towns, such as here at the Charcoal Run house on Saw Mill Road in New Fairfield. Join us as we discuss this little-known aspect of Civil War history as it played out here in Connecticut.

The presentation is in celebration of the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War.

ADMISSION IS FREE, and families and history buffs are encouraged to attend.

The event is being co-sponsored by Preserve New Fairfield, Inc., and the New Fairfield Historic Properties Commission

Refreshments will be served.
